Maryett [Mariett 1835-1892] Bogart and Kate [Catherine 1844-1932] born in the Town of Dryden, Tompkins County, New York. We have two samplers that are hand stitched by each sister along with a manuscript album containing poems and braided hair samples from their family and friends. In 1847, at age 12, Maryett demonstrated her sewing mastery with a 16" X 7 3.4" sampler of wool on linen, showing 4 different embroidered alphabets with one set of numbers and her age surrounded with a border. There is evidence of some folding with some light damage and fading. Nicely framed with a brief genealogy on the reverse frame backing in ink. Marietta Bogart 1835-1892 buried Willow Glen Cemetery [Dryden, NY]. Lived with father Aaron Bogart 1803-1887 and mother Susan Todd Bogart 1802-1886 on military lot No. 66 in Town of Dryden, [NY] Later in 1860, at age 16, her sister Kate presented her knowledge of embroidery with a 12 1/2" X 17 1/4" sampler using wool on linen with 4 different alphabets, one set of numbers, name and age plus 4 designs and a partial border. Minor stains, very good condition in a nice frame and a more extensive handwritten genealogy on the back of the frame backing. Kate Bogart 1844-1932 lived with parents and sister as well as brother Nelson Bogart 1833-1885. She taught Ellis Hollow School 1865 and married Fred J. Horton. The hair jewelry album, 8 1/2" X 6 1/4", has 8 manuscript leaves in plain wraps. There are 21 examples of braided and twisted hair along with some mottoes and the person's name. These beloved friends and relatives contributed these keepsakes and good wishes. Circa 1860. Hair jewelry was very popular during the Victorian period. Samplers were used to exhibit the skill of the embroiderer. "Schoolgirl samplers from early American have become extremely popular as records of the social evolution of the education system, of women's place in society, and as highly personal glimpses into life in other times." - Kurella. THE COMPLETE GUIDE TO VINTAGE TEXTILES. 1999. In addition, there are 5 cartes de visites of the sisters and some family members along with two watercolor portraits 9 1/2" X 8" that are not identified.
